The society for the welfare of horses and ponies  We care for abused or injured horses and ponies, rehabilitating them and re-homing them in a safe, caring environment. No horse or pony taken in by SWHP is ever sold. We re-home each horse or pony on a loan basis and monitor their progress through yearly visits.  We take back any re-homed horse or pony that can no longer be kept by an adoptive home, whatever the reason and find it another home 30 years ago, foals were being sold at markets for a couple of pounds and exported to Spain or Greece for slaughter. Many died on the way. The Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies started when Sheila Richards, our founder, bought some of these foals. International League for the Protection of Horses World Horse Welfare (Registered charity no: 206658 and SC038384) is a charity dedicated to giving abused and neglected horses a second chance in life. On the site you will find an overview of our work, our approach to caring for horses, our history and information about how we are run. There are also facts and figures, some basic statistics about our horses and an outline of the impact of World Horse Welfare on horses, both in Britain and overseas.  Our four recovery and rehabilitation centres, located throughout Great Britain are open to the public all year too, so you can come and meet some of our horses.
